Heya! Basically, all this hack does is causes Timbuktu Extensions to run (almost) unnoticably off of another persons computer. The icons that appear in the Menu Bar have been erased, along with the menu entries. The actual application and the program code resources in the extensions have not been tampered with at all. Basically, this lets you connect with Timbuktu Pro to any computer this is set up on.
WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO DO THIS?
Timbuktu Pro is used as a network control device. What happens is this: you can connect to any other computer running Timbuktu Pro that you have acess privelages for.
When you connect you have the following abilities:
Observe the screen of the computer (shows up as a window on your
computer)
CONTROL that other computer as if you were sitting in front of it! (your
mouse even moves the other computer's mouse if it's on the window with
the remote computer's screen)
Exchange files (works like Apple file Exchange)
copy clipboard contents to remote computer's clipboard(or vice versa)
take snapshots of the other person's screen
send them "flashnotes".
HOW TO SET UP.
Unstuff the archive (in StuffIt format).
You should see a folder, an extention, a Prefs file, and a seemingly random sentence.. Take the folder "Timbuktu" and the "Network Update 1.1" (Timbuktu Extention) and put them in the Extentions folder. (NOTE: you CANNOT change the name "Timbuktu" to something else. The extention looks for that specific folder name in the extentions folder. Changing the name will result in Timbuktu not loading it's network drivers).
The random sentence is actually a folder with a blank icon. Place this in the top directory of the computer which this is being installed upon. Delete the name so you cannot physicaly see the folder. (making the folder invisible with ResEdit so it desn't come up in the item cound for the folder also hides it from the Timbuktu extention. This tends to be not good.).
Put the preferences file in the Preferences folder in a folder called Timbuktu Preferences.
Restart.
KNOWN BUGS:
Although the menu icon is deleted, it still causes a shift of the clock in the menu bar over to the right.
The timbuktu Extention shows up in the "MacOS starting up" screen. That's why I renamed it instead of making it invisible. Haen't tried making it invisible with ResEdit.
I haven't been able to disable the Log file which keeps track of connections to the computer. The Log file is created and stored in the Preferences folder that contains the Timbuktu Preferences. It records the Owner Name, Macintosh Name (as defined by the Sharing Setup), an It's IP number (even for AppleTalk.) Incongnito 1.12 doesn't hide things for the log file.
The Timbuktu preferences folder may be corrupt. If it is, you will have to open Timbuktu Pro (inside the iconless folder) after restarting and do the following:
Turn Appletalk/TCP connections "on"
set Guest access privlages in the Define Users item (in Setup menu).
p.s. by exploring Timbuktu Pro, I think you'll find some other neat things to do to increase saftey / dive people nuts :)
DO NOT OBSERVE/CONTROL A COMPUTER THAT IS OBSERVING/CONTROLING YOURS unless you want both computers to crash :). The network/procesor load that goes into sustaining the resulting "infinity" picture (a screen in a screen in a screen...etc.) is VERY large!)
